All voted
unanimously in favor.
Shellfish Constable Report:
Quahog seed was delivered in early June, and has grown from 2 mm to approximately 6mm. The phytoplankton
(quahog food) in the water at Little River has been good and high in concentration, until a zooplankton blooms came up
and harvested a large portion of the phytoplankton. The phytoplankton blooms historically have been high in the
summer months, and we are hoping that another bloom comes up soon. So far,the quahogs look healthy and we have
plenty of room in the upweller systems for future growth.
Our FLUPSY(FLoating UPweller SYstem) docks 1-3 are up and running for the small quahog seed, and we are working on
getting 4-5 docks set up for larger sized seed. We are also working on our bottom trays and reconstructing them to be
deployed in the southernmost site in Great River where the quahogs will remain until they reach planting size.
The Shellfish division received 1,000 remote set oyster bays on July 6th, and they were all deposited in the Mashpee
River that same day. The set was fed algae in circular tanks at the Aquaculture Research Cooperation in Dennis for 2
weeks, and the oysters are set on the Sea Clam shell already seem to have grown to approximately 2mm in size.
Partnering with the town of Falmouth's Marine and Environmental Affairs and Chuck Martenson the Shellfish Division
was able to install a small floating farm in the Mashpee River. This is a first for Mashpee using this type of system.
Deployed in the floating bags are both 11t and 2nd year oysters. The goal of the project is to compare the amount of
nutrient removal and mortality data with trays and the other farms installed in Little Pond in Falmouth. The project is
exciting because two towns will be comparing nutrient removal rates seen by oysters in two different water bodies.
Peter Thomas asked if the area has been cleaned,Ashley Fisher said trays have been cleaned and we will get some
growth.
Patrol Log: 1 citation was issued to a commercial harvester with a Falmouth License fishing on the Mashpee side of
Waquoit Bay. He was found to have 20%seed in his catch and was issued a citation for the amount of$50.00. The
individual has decided to fight the citation in Falmouth District Court, and I am awaiting a hearing date.
Aquaculture Licenses: The Shellfish Commission has decided to move forward to the Board of Selectmen and request a
moratorium on the issuance of any new Shellfish Aquaculture Licenses with the exception of Burtis, Bohnenberger,
Matoain,Smith, and Cook. This would prevent the expectance of any NEW applications for new sites to the Shellfish
