The Chair watched"When They See Us," on Netflix. Although difficult to watch, the Chair
recommended viewing the program which depicted assumptions made related to race and class, as well
as issues with the prison system.
Ms. Nadeau announced that the Unity Festival would take place on the Community Green in
Hyannis, August 4-7. Ms.Nadeau will forward information to the Chair to be forwarded to the
Committee. Ms. Nadeau also suggested viewing"Race Amity &the Other Tradition." There was
interest expressed by the Committee to view the program during the day so Ms. Nadeau will look
further into viewing the movie.
NEW BUSINESS
Vote on Recommended Increase of Student Representatives-The Chair stated that, at this
time, membership allowed for just one student member. The Committee would need to vote to request
the additional student member with the Board of Selectmen.
MOTION: Ms. Brown made a motion to amend membership to allow for up to two high school
students to serve for two years.
Procedures for Minutes-The Chair stated that she reviewed Open Meeting Law which
confirmed that the Committee needed to maintain accurate minutes for all meetings. The Chair felt
that detailed minutes would be helpful, moving on, for the future. Additionally, the Chair noted that
attendees of a meeting in Falmouth indicated their wish to have someone available to draft minutes.
Rather than reducing minutes to summary at this time, the Chair has requested that minutes be sent one
to two weeks from the meeting, to allow time to review them in advance of the next meeting. Ms.
Wilson asked that a distinction be made between people's subjective opinion about an event they
attended versus the feelings of the Committee as a whole by stating that it was their opinion,
observation or thoughts about a matter. Ms. Waterman referenced minutes from the prior Affirmative
Action Committee located on the Town's website in Archives. Ms. Waterman suggested that some
material discussed could be sensitive or have differing opinions, and would appear in a public
document and could be misunderstood. The Chair added that, within the minutes, a list of documents
would be included, but the document itself did not need to be included, but would need to be available.
Volunteers-The Chair wished to identify a way to involve members of the community wishing
to assist with the work of the Committee. The Chair has learned from the Town Clerk that a sub-
committee could be established to serve as a support system or volunteer group,to assist with
initiatives. The sub-committee would be chaired by one member of the MIDC, to serve as a liaison. A
member of the public,Deborah Davis was acknowledged, and expressed her opinion that it would be a
good idea, indicating her hope to support and promote diversity and inclusion. Ms. Waterman and Ms.
Hendricks suggested that it would be helpful to identify tasks that would be appropriate for volunteers.
Ms. Nadeau suggested that it may still be early to meet with volunteers but it would be helpful to begin
developing a list of volunteers. There was discussion about developing a list connected to the MIDC
email.
Ms. Waterman suggested that it would be helpful to add Public Comment to the beginning of the
agenda to allow for comment from others and to also provide an opportunity for potential interested
members to address the Committee.
3
