Town of Mashpee ,
j418tt7Y`l --a.1 .OY72YYZT.S'ZC)t
16 Great Neck Road North
A4i Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Telephone - (508) 539-1438
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—August 8, 2019
The Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Ava Costello, Chair, at
4:01 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, Brian Hyde, Nancy Soderberg and
Joan Tavares-Avant, and Brian Weeden.
Commissioners not Present: Rosemary Burns Love
Minutes from the July meeting were approved as amended. Motion was moved by Richard and
seconded by Joan.
Richard and Nancy are sharing the responsibilities of schoolhouse summer tours, and they
reported that they have already had quite a few visitors. Richard has taken the MOSH trifold
handout around to the MCOC, Senior Center, Town Hall and Mashpee Public Library so visitors
can pick them up, find out about the Schoolhouse, and be able to visit or schedule a future tour.
Richard has already scheduled tours with a few groups who plan to tour in the next few weeks.
Frank has set up a meeting for August 26th at the Archives for the MOSH Preservation Council
to officially appoint a new President and Schoolmaster for the one-room schoolhouse.
Richard has been working on documenting the names of all of the Mashpee war veterans. He
has been meeting with the Military Representative regularly. He reported that the Tribe has
published his list of names in their newsletter, and that he had posted his list of names at other
prominent places around town, and he has been getting additions, corrections, and deletions of
names via phone calls and emails. Military records in the past were not well kept, and a serious
fire wiped out some of the records in St. Louis. However, in the wars since WWII, it has been
easier to get documented records.
We are planning to have an Open House at the Archives on October 14' from 11:00am to
2:00pm, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Mashpee Historical Commission and the newly
designated Mashpee holiday, Indigenous Peoples Day. Brian Weeden will arrange to have
members of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal youth to drum, sing, and dance at the celebration
dressed in their native regalia. This will also be the last day for the Schoolhouse tours. The
Archives will welcome visitors to view our displays of Mashpee maps and photos.
