[Agenda`'topic'31 Nutrient Management Map
Discussion: Mike reported that at the last Selectmen's meeting, a crowd was encouraging the Selectmen to
do something about deciding how to address the sewer needs in town. This has been continued for years
as the water bodies in Town degrade. They did allocate some money to get people's questions answered.
Whether to go it alone as the Town, join Joint Base Cape Cod or other Towns remains up in the air. The
Selectmen gave themselves a deadline of January lst to "do something."
Mike feels members of this committee should write to Selectman Gottlieb before September 9t", letting
him know that the areas around Mashpee Wakeby should be included in the first phase of the sewer plans.
Conclusions: Members will write to the Selectmen, voicing concerns about lack of action on sewer
planning and asking that Mashpee Wakeby area be included in Phase of the sewer plan.
[Agenda topic;4]Beach Sampling for Bacteria
Discussion: Barnstable County continues to test many marine and fresh water bodies for bacteria
weekly, throughout the summer. Both Attaquin Beach and Camp Farley on Mashpee Pond were deemed
acceptable for swimming from June 6t"through August 5t".Brian mentioned that the beach in his area on
the west side of Mashpee also passed all testing.
Conclusions: All beaches on Mashpee Wakeby tested negative for bacteria.
[Agenda topic 5] Harbormaster News
Discussion: Jeffrey Smith,Harbormaster attended our meeting and gave us a summary of his first summer
on the job and particularly on Mashpee Wakeby lake. He said there were over 224 hours logged on the
lake and one citation written for excessive speed in a No Wake zone. Twenty verbal warnings were given.
He also received complaints of loud music from a boat, and did ask a few boats to turn down their radios,
although he has no authority in this area. Noise complaints should be addressed to the Police Department
on their emergency number as it is a civil disturbance.
He also documented and reported people using the private islands, however the paperwork has not gone
through to transfer ownership to the Native Conservancy. Until the islands are posted No Trespassing, Jeff
has no authority to ask people to leave.
Some swim buoys at Lowell Holly have been displaced, but Jeff is still limiting motorized boats from the
area. He is also enforcing a 15 minutes stay on the beach by the boat launching area. It is to be used for
strictly for launching or removing boats from the lake.
He expects to begin mooring tagging next week.
Committee members let Jeff know that the added coverage on the lake lead to a much safer and quieter
boating season.
Conclusions: Added Harbormaster coverage has led to a safe, quieter season.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara B.Nichols
