Jim stated
that Leslie-Ann McGee is currently the acting Director of WBNERR. Jim explained that his job is to
take care of"the place", that is the Reserve, and also South Cape Beach and Washburn Island.
Allen Morris's title is Facilities Manager and park supervisor, whose responsibility it is to take care of
all of"the things", i.e., the buildings, the parking lot, the trucks, electrical systems and the physical
resources. Jim takes care of clearing trails, camping on Washburn, fishery, etc.
Jim gave the following update of what has been going on in the recent past, and what is up and
coming for the season ahead. Last summer, WBNERR finished up the salt marsh restoration
project, replacing the two culverts, replacing the wooden bridge that goes to the beach, and the
other one on the road that goes to the town parking lot. Monitoring work continues on that, with
birds, fish, and vegetation monitoring beginning next month. Roadside trimming has been done
down the road heading toward the town beach and to the Bayberry parking lot. The Bayberry Pond
cage has been cleaned out of all refuse except for the lifeguard chairs which are stored there.
Jim Rassman announced that this year the Bayberry parking lot will be open on a trial basis to the
public for parking on the same schedule as the State Park gates to the beach. Memorial Day the
State Park gates will be open; on June 20th, entrance fees to the parking lot will begin to be
collected. There will be no fee for parking at the Bayberry Pond lot.
Jim stated that the double gates to both Bayberry and State Park parking lots will be freshly painted
this year.
Three quarters of Flat Pond Trail have been cleared. Jim hopes to be able to replace the wooden
bridge and put in a permanent board walk for the trail. No Parking signs will also be replaced at the
gate at Dead Neck Trail. Jim stated that.there are Trail Stewards who monitor the trails and report
back to him as to needed work.
There will be life guards on duty this year at the State Park Beach, from 8 AM to 5 PM. Training for
the lifeguards took place on Saturday, May 16`h, and fee collections at the entrance to the beach
road will be more strict this year. The daily parking fee is still $7.00.
In summary, Jim stated that seasonal road conditions, buildings, etc. will be handled by Allan Morris;
trail conditions, restoration, etc., will be Jim's concern. Allan Morris will plan to attend the
committee's next meeting to give an update report on his activities this past winter and plans for the
coming season. Discussion of the bike rack at the State Park beach path will be included in his
report.
Jeri Smith thanked Jim Rassman for attending the meeting tonight, and stated that he will be kept on
the mailing list for minutes and meeting announcements. Requests for his or Allan's presence at
future committee meetings will depend upon the topics included on the meeting agenda.
2
