Proposed Ecological Restoration Project of Childs River. Land owners: Falmouth Road
and Gun Club, Town of Falmouth, Mashpee Conservation Commission.
Nick Nelson from Inter-Fluve represented the Falmouth Rod & Gun Club. The project spans a
few locations in Mashpee and Falmouth, he presented plans that focused on the Mashpee
component. The goals are to remove barriers to flow passage, remove liability of dam
ownership, 'improve resiliency, improve aquatic and terrestrial habitat, minimize long term
maintenance, and maintain recreational opportunities.
Agent asked to describe riparian planting. Nick Nelson. responded saying willows, .dogwood,
red maple, common shrubs-all similar to what was done at Coonamessett River in Falmouth.
There is a net increase in resources. .
Mr. Sweet asked if this is similar to Eel River, Nick Nelson said yes, within 1 year the site
restores pretty quickly.
Mr. Bregman asked whose jurisdiction the bogs are under, Nick Nelson said they are owned by
the town.
Agent said Childs River Conservation Land is under 30 year lease with the Falmouth,Rod &
Gun Club. We wouldn't qualify for as many grants as a nonprofit.
Nick Nelson commented on future uses-the goal is to maintain as current passive recreation.
Ms. Cadoret asked about restoration of the stream in between.
Nick Nelson said not in those forested riparian zones, no plans to work.
Ms. Cadoret asked about increase flow from the culvert replacement.
Nick Nelson answered there would be no increase in volume flow or velocity. There would be
initial water control to remove those structures.
Ms. Cadoret asked how the Atlantic White Cedars at Eel River are thriving.
Nick Nelson said really well, they were about 3ft when planted and are over 20ft now.
Ms. Cadoret asked if that would happen here as well, to take genetic stock from surrounding
areas and use that for this restoration effort?
Nick Nelson said they haven't discussed that for this site yet. In this case and in Falmouth
we've used cedar trees from local nurseries.
Agent asked more about the bogs and what's happening there.
Nick Nelson said they are keeping that depth, but expanding a little bit westward into the west
bog where.there will be a shallow component.
Agent asked if there's a plan to test the water quality.
Nick Nelson said there is .a lot of monitoring going on right now, but he doesn't know the
specifics but can get back to you on that.
Agent asked what the expectation is for fish passage?
Nick Nelson answered any and all is possible, Brook Trout have been known to be in the area,
I do anticipate herring, perhaps blue backs and American eel.
Agent said it's a great project and it's great to see these old bog areas start restoration.
Motion: Mr. Smith moved to close and issue, seconded by Mr. Dalton.,
Vote: 5-0 unanimous
6:15 Akram E. & Marta O.
