New Voting Member Status-Due to a time conflict for Mr. Fand, the Chair met with
Selectman Cotton regarding Mr. Fand's candidacy for the vacancy. Selectman Cotton
recommend a letter of explanation, which has since been submitted to the Board of Selectmen.
As Mr. Klein was currently in Florida, Selectman Cotton recommended that his nomination be
submitted at the beginning of March when he would be available to meet.
Report for Town Meeting-The Chair stated that the report had been sent to the Town
Manager's office. The Chair was grateful for editing assistance and feedback from Ms. DeBoer,
Ms. Waterman, Ms. Landry and Ms. GWilson.
Mashpee Speaks T.V. Project,Bill Nay-Mr. Nay was unable to attend this meeting, but
was still interested in developing the Mashpee Speaks program.
Outside Activities-The Chair attended Falmouth's MLK Breakfast and shared her
experience. The Chair also viewed the movie Just Mercy and attended the Hyannis Symphony's
Passport to Africa.
Diversity Day-The Chair shared her experiences at Diversity Day and some of the
specifics of the program, including Pam Purdy's contributions, the key note speaker. The Chair
had distributed a number of invitations to attend the event, but many were out of town at a
conference. The event had been videotaped and would be part of the Human Right's Club
presentation at the Human Rights Academy. Others shared very positive feedback regarding
their attendance at the event. An article appeared in the Enterprise about the day. It was hoped
that a future event could be extended into Diversity Week and be open to a greater number of
attendees, possibly coordinating the event with an activity such as a Town wide book read.
NEW BUSINESS
Forum with Falmouth &Barnstable Guests-Having attended a variety of events, the
Chair invited individuals to share their experiences in their own organizations located here on
Cape, to include Eileen Elias of Barnstable's No Place for Hate Steering Committee, Joanne
Treistman of the Town of Falmouth Affirmative Action and Diversity Committee and Kwanza
Johnson of the Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee. The Chair had shared some ideas of
items to discuss with the guests. The Chair had also invited Falmouth's No Place for Hate, and a
Commissioner on the Human Rights Commission, but they were unable to attend today's
meeting.
Ms. Elias discussed Barnstable's No Place for Hate kickoff in October 2019, noting that it had
been originally certified during the establishment of ADL NPFH programs nationwide. As
recent racial and anti-Semitic attacks on Cape and nationwide increased, a steering group was
developed incorporating a diverse membership representing a wide range of stakeholders. The
group rotated their monthly meetings at different locations. Ms. GWilson inquired whether the
group was an off shoot of the Human Rights Commission and Ms. Elias responded that they
were not an off shoot and their program was inclusionary with a variety of members, while they
determined whether they wished to become part of a government structure, nor were they
currently a non-profit organization. The group's emphasis has been on individual training,
2
