There is an interactive cyanobacteria page on APCC.org that is tracking 35 ponds every two weeks.
APCC is using a flourometer to detect toxic cells, and will compare them to the Dept. of Public
Health's data using cell counts. Santuit Pond is still testing over 70,000 cells/mL. Solarbees cannot
address the underlying problems of phosphorus loading from interior and exterior sources. There is
some concern the postings are not timely. Even ponds that are not densely developed like Santuit have
suffered from blooms, including Gull Pond in Wellfleet. There are other issues too, such as invasive
snail feces in Cliff Pond in Brewster, where an alum treatment occurred unsuccessfully.
The HAB Stat and C-PIX devices from WHOI are currently being calibrated, which will be able to
detect and identify cell types and toxins in real time.
Mashpee CWMP:
• DNR/Estuary Restoration/Shellfish Program: Update—including Brian Howes report
Shellfish constable Ashley Fisher elaborated on the shellfish theft that has been occurring, on Dick
Cook's grant mainly. It is bottom gear that can be flipped and stolen. They have increased patrols and
surveillance, and have looked at the wholesale market. It is unclear who has transaction cards, as the
State DMF does not like to divulge that information. They can give it to the EPO's. Tribal member do
not need commercial permits through the town.
• IMA's with other towns; DRI Review Process: Update
No update.
• Planning and Funding for Wastewater (WW) Management/Sewers: Update
There will be special Selectman Meetings happening on certain Mondays in the next few month, and the
dates are 9/16, 10115, 10/28, 11/12, 11/25 and 12/9. The Facebook page "Mashpee Clean Waters"will
do Zoom-platform based online working sessions to address all aspects of Waste Water, and the dates
are 9/24, 10/8, 10/22, 1115, 11/19 and 12/3.
The Phase I cost per person is flawed at this time. All 5 Phases are projected to cost$120M.
• Mashpee Nutrient Control Bylaw; Update
No update.
• Town-wide Stormwater Management-Mitigation Planning: Update
See above for update.
REPORTS
Conservation Department Report:
• Herring Run Fish Ladder Improvements; Herring Count Program w/APCC: Update
There is currently a Phase I inspection occurring at Johns Pond fish ladder, mandated by the Office of
Dam Safety. The data from the 2019 count season is still being figured out.
• Conservation Department Events and Pollinator Garden Maintenance: Update
Katelyn and volunteers have been weeding the gardens, and we may buy more plants this fall. There are
a lot of asters and goldenrods blooming at this time. It was discovered that solitary wasps are using the
nest boxes, and can be identified by the use of pine needles and other straw like material.
• Land Stewards Program: Update
There have been a few trail clearing and pollinator garden maintenance in the last few weeks. The
Tribal Americorps members are helping with Pickerel Cove.
• Damage to and Dumping on Conservation Lands: Update
No update.
2
