Mashpee - Wakeby Lake Management
Committee
January 28,2020
7:00 PM
Mash pee Town Hall'
Meeting called by: Debi McManus
Type of meeting: Monthly
Secretary Barbara B. Nichols
Attendees: Members: Brian Mauro, Don MacDonald, Barbara Nichols, Mike Rapacz
Guests: Julie Feeney,Nathaniel Doane
The minutes of the November 26, 2019 meeting were accepted as written after a motion by Brian Mauro
and second by Don MacDonald
Agenda topics
[Agenda topic 1] Lake level/River outflow
Discussion: Brian Mauro took the lake levels on December 2rd and 15"', and they were 55.7 and 55.8
feet above sea level with 17.5 and 14.5 inches of water flowing over the board closest to the lake. There
were 15 and 18 inches of water in the stream by the stairs. Barbara had 15.7 inches of rain in her rain
gauge. She saw Drew in Town Hall and discussed the high lake levels with him. He mentioned the
possibility of removing boards. Levels were emailed to Drew in Conservation.
Brian got the lake levels on January 2"d and 15"'. They were 56.3 and 55.7 feet above sea level with 13
and 11 inches of water flowing over the board closest to the lake. There were 19 and 15.5 inches of water
in the stream by the stairs. Levels were reported to Drew McManus in Conservation. Drew emailed that
he had removed a 6 inch board from the ladder by the Mill Pond.
Conclusions: High precipitation continues to lead to high lake levels.
[Agenda topic 2] Storms Drains Lakewood
Melissa Ave.
Discussion: One of the concerns of the Mashpee Municipal Vulnerability Program was storm water run-
off issues. Lakewood Drive is a prime example where undersized storm drains cannot handle the rain
and it funnels down the road directly into the lake, also washing the pathway dirt out into the lake. This is
one of the prime causes of increased phosphorus in the lake and needs to be fixed with much larger drains.
Melissa Avenue is another area with drains that are too small, although in this case, the water runs down
Jones Road and floods South Sandwich Rd. Barbara spoke with Catherine Laurent several weeks ago
regarding small drains on Melissa and a town truck came up and looked at it. It was unanimously voted to
send a letter to the Selectmen about replacing these small drains to correct the storm water run-off.
Barbara will write the letter
Conclusions: Storm basins in the Lakewood and Melissa Ave area need to be replaced with larger ones to
help protect the lake from storm water run- off and further degradation.
