Mashpee Sewer Commission & Town Manager
August 5, 2010
Page 2
Task 2. Pirates Cove Groundwater Quality and Flow Characterization
The study area's groundwater nitrogen quality and flow will be characterized with the production of
the following deliverables:
• Groundwater contour maps* at one foot (1') intervals — along with noting areas affected by
tidal influences
• Groundwater quality nitrogen contours** at least three elevations for:
o TKN
o Ammonia
o Nitrate (NO3)
o Nitrite (NO2)
• Shoreline seepage areas and seepage velocities, along with any tidal influences
• Description of the seepage area(s) aquatic environment from the perspective of likely
impacts from existing septic system discharges and potential anaerobic waters in a future
that would have improved water quality standards compliant conditions.
*ARCVIEW format compatible with Task 1 basemaps
**ARCVIEW format compatible with Task 1 basemaps
The deliverables will be created based upon the following data collection program, the goals of
which include:
• Characterize general geology of study area (Mashpee Neck)
• Characterize general groundwater flow patterns &velocity in study area
• Characterize areal and vertical distribution of nitrate concentrations and estimate nitrate
mass flux & mass discharge passing through an imaginary transect along Captain's Row
road.
Task 2.1 — Develop Initial SCM
a. Review & summarize information in published reports
b. Review remote sensing data (e.g., thermal imagery and other data to investigate
groundwater and nitrate discharge to surface water
Task 2.2 — Field Investigation
a. Advance Geoprobe EC or Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) at locations in yellow (11
locations); collect continuous cores at 5 of the locations for lithologic logging & calibration of
EC/HPT data. Advance to 20 or so below water table (35 feet total?)
b. Collect depth-discrete groundwater samples with Waterloo Profiler at about 26 locations
shown in red dots. We would provide & operate the profiling tool but the tool would be
advanced by a local contractor. We would collect samples at 4 to 5 different depths &
analyze them in the field for nitrate using a Hach test kit. 20% of the samples would be
analyzed in a fixed laboratory for QC
c. Install 3-channel (3/4 inch total OD) CMT multilevel monitoring wells at the locations
depicted by yellow dots (11 total). Depths of sampling/monitoring ports would be based on
Environmental Engineers/Consultants
