*DRAFT SELECTMEN MINUTES 4-6-2020* 6
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
April 6, 2020
NEW BUSINESS
Discussion and Amoroval of Postponement of the Annual Town Election Pursuant to and in Accordance
with Chap ter 45 of the Acts of 2020: (continued)
Discussion and A roval'of Relocating the Annual Town Election Polling Place and Determination of
Times for Openina and Closing of Polls:
The Board of Selectmen discussed the options to postpone the Annual Town Election prior to June 30,
2020 or to proceed with the Annual Town Election on May 19, 2020. The Town Clerk-has recommended
the Board consider scheduling the election of May 19, 2020, but modify the hours from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. Current election laws require that local elections begin no later than 12 noon for a minimum of 4
hours. Lessening the hours will encourage voters to cast their votes by mail using the absentee ballot. An
additional option is to hold the election at Town Hall versus the School.
Mrs. Dam.i indicated she has held voting in Town Hall a number of times with minimal logistical issues.
With the social distancing rule, and fifteen workers, only five voters would be allowed into the polling
place at one time.
It is the recommendation of the Town Clerk to emphasize early voting or by absentee ballot for the safety
of residents and to alleviate congestion within Town Hall, It was suggested that voting be made available
in the morning and in the late afternoon to allow for further flexibility. Discussion followed regarding a
possible modification in hours and stressing the importance of absentee ballots. Ballots would be made
available on the Town's website. The Reverse 911 system, the School message board and signage at
Town Hall would be considered for notification purposes as well as the local newspaper.
Motion made by Selectman Cotton to move the Board vote to maintain the date of May 19, 2020
for the Annual Town Election and relocate the polling place from the Quashnet School to the
Mashpee Town Bail and that the time for the opening and closing of the polls for said Annual Town
Election be 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, respectively.
Motion seconded by Selectman Sherman,
VOTE: 4-1.
