The Chief added that they <br /> would continue to seek diversity in qualified new hires, conduct fair internal investigations, ensure <br /> consistent disciplinary practices and pursue early intervention strategies in the face of possible <br /> misconduct. <br /> Ms.Nadeau thanked Chief Carline for his work in Mashpee and inquired how police officers interacted <br /> positively with families outside of the school. Chief Carlin responded that Mashpee officers were <br /> encouraged to take advantage of any opportunity to engage and assist members of the community, such <br /> as changing a tire, shoveling a mailbox or relaying medication. In addition, the Community Service <br /> Unit hosted a variety of events to interact with families and community members, including Cones <br /> with Cops, Coffee with Cops and National Night Out. The Chief emphasized their goal to connect <br /> with the community in a positive way. <br /> Ms. Johnson-Graham thanked Chief Carline for his hard work and shared her family's experience of <br /> inequities when her uncle was shot by a police officer during the 1980s. Ms. Johnson-Graham <br /> emphasized a continued need for officers to be held accountable for their actions. Ms. Johnson- <br /> Graham liked the idea of the body cameras and school resource officers, who she has found has <br /> worked very well with students and families. <br /> Chairwoman Stevenson pointed out that while the Mashpee Police Department would continue to be <br /> faced with challenges due to past history, they would also be dealing with such challenges as drug <br /> addiction, mental illness and domestic violence. The Chief confirmed that calls regarding mental <br /> health and substance abuse had more recently increased dramatically, but managed with best practices <br /> and communication. The Chair referenced training and the ways in which the Committee may be able <br /> help and the Chief responded that they worked with many agencies such as Children's Cove,NAMI <br /> and domestic violence agencies. The Chief added that they were always seeking outside resources and <br /> were willing to accept such resources. The Chair expressed concern about recent activity from White <br /> Nationalist groups and the Chief responded that they would be fully investigating incidents and <br /> notifying the community when needed. The Chair inquired whether MPD.would be interested in <br /> connecting an officer with a community member to share background experiences and motivations and <br /> the Chief responded with interest. The Chief also emphasized the importance of sharing both the good <br /> and areas of improvement, noting that a seat at the table was helpful with communication. The Chair <br /> inquired about Use of Force Policy and Chief Carline confirmed that each case was reviewed carefully, <br /> and that it was a policy that had been carefully reviewed by a national expert. <br /> The Chair thanked the Chief for his work and the work of his department, emphasizing the <br /> Committee's willingness to support their efforts. Chief Carline provided his email for future contact <br /> with any questions, and appreciated the opportunity for a seat at the table. <br /> School Committee Anti-Racism Resolution-The Chair inquired whether the Committee <br /> wished to share an opinion, endorse the Resolution or discuss the matter further at the next meeting. <br /> Ms. Nadeau expressed appreciation for the School Administration and thanked them for understanding <br /> the importance of releasing a statement. Ms. DeBoer noted that the School Committee led the way to <br /> supporting the statement. It was Ms. Johnson-Graham's opinion that it was a powerful statement that <br /> the schools were standing strong for what they believed in. There was consensus to discuss the matter <br /> by email in order to ratify within 30 days and Ms. Landry agreed to look into the matter as it related to <br /> Open Meeting Law. <br /> 3 <br />
