Human Rights Club Update-The Chair has also been in discussion with Ms. Hendricks <br /> regarding the development of a student welcome program for the middle and high school, and the <br /> possibility that it be developed as a project for the Human Rights Club. In connection with the <br /> program,volunteer students could serve as a big brother or big sister to a new student. Ms. Hendricks <br /> described a pen pal program initiated over the summer, adding the possibility of regulated student <br /> meetings to discuss club and extracurricular activities. Ms. Hendricks noted that new students could <br /> no longer participate in shadowing, so a program to develop connections would be beneficial <br /> The Chair continued to be in contact with Ms. Purdy, who was working on proposing a way to manage <br /> the club this year. Ms. DeBoer confirmed that all clubs and activities were submitting proposals to <br /> hold meetings virtually. Ms. DeBoer noted that in past years,the school hosted welcome breakfasts, <br /> but if a pen pal program was established, students could be matched according to their cohort in order <br /> to encourage an opportunity to meet. <br /> The Chair reported that the Club had received a grant to travel to New York, and it was hoped that the <br /> trip could be postponed to a future date. The Human Rights Academy contact would be participating <br /> in the forum the Chair was leading. The Chair expressed concern regarding this year's Diversity Day, <br /> but Ms. DeBoer recommended that a virtual version could be developed. <br /> Conversations Project-The Chair introduced Dan Kupferman, who was interested in <br /> participating in the Conversation Project, as well as potentially applying to serve on the Committee. <br /> Mr. Kupferman indicated that, with his recent retirement, he was interested in learning more about <br /> social injustice issues and had been interested in connecting with the Wampanoag Tribe. The Chair <br /> connected Mr. Kupferman with Mr. Billy Pocknett, with plans to participate in a two-way exchange <br /> through Zoom, eventually further expanding the program. <br /> Recruitment for Open Positions-The Chair confirmed that Mr. Kupferman had submitted a <br /> letter of interest, but she had also learned that someone else may be interested. The Chair had also <br /> reached out to the NAACP regarding the vacancy, but had not yet received a response. <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> Guest Speaker Chief Carline-The Chair noted that other towns were also in discussion with <br /> their Chiefs of Police in regard to their programs and efforts. Chief Carlin was last present with the <br /> Committee in 2018, when he discussed community policing and their efforts to build community trust. <br /> At that time,the Chief discussed their Community Service Unit, which was focused on identifying the <br /> core needs of the community, providing outreach programs and specialized events in an effort to <br /> develop a collaborative and supportive relationship to build public trust and mutual respect. Regarding <br /> policy updates, Chief Carline referenced the Bias Based Profiling Policy, updated in 2019, to recognize <br /> a commitment to protecting the Constitutional and Civil Rights of all Mashpee residents, and did not <br /> condone, and strictly prohibited, bias based profiling. Over the last few years,the Mashpee Police <br /> Department had been seeking State accreditation from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program <br /> showing a commitment to professional excellence in the workplace and adopting best practice <br /> standards, both administratively and operationally. The Mashpee Police Department would have an <br /> on-site assessment on November 2 and 3 to move toward their certification. In 2019, a Civil Rights <br /> Officer was appointed to address policy review and any civil rights issues. Additionally, all officers <br /> would complete de-escalation training in December. A new School Resource Officer had also been <br /> hired. Regarding technology, the Chief shared the Police Department's mission statement,updated on <br /> their website, which reflected the mission, and its core values of professionalism, respect, integrity, <br /> 2 <br />
