was hoped that the Human Rights Club would assist with the program. There was also discussion about the Big
Brother/Big Sister program, and Mr. Baker agreed it would be beneficial to include the Human Rights Club.
Developing Cape & South Shore Diversity Coalition-The Chair confirmed that the group, grown from
the MIDC's collaborative meeting in February, was able to meet through Mashpee's Zoom account. In addition
to the Chair and Ms. Nadeau, attendees included Falmouth Affirmative Action Committee,NPFH Falmouth,
Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee,NPFH Barnstable and Prejudice Free Duxbury. The Chair would
also be reaching out to NPFH Plymouth, as well Sandwich's School Committee who was developing the
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisory Committee. Regarding the Coalition meeting, Ms. Nadeau noted that
there was discussion regarding Barnstable's progress, as well as how groups were addressing issues of racism
during the pandemic, how the organization was started and discussion about each committee's work in their
communities.
Conversations Project-Dan Kupferman shared his experience talking with Billy Pocknett, member of
the Wampanoag Tribe. Mr. Kupferman described the conversation as a great learning experience, for both
parties, and their plans to continue talking. Ms. Johnson-Graham agreed that it was a good experience for
others to learn more about the Wampanoag Tribe culture. The Chair added her hope to develop a format for
others to participate and inquired who Committee members would like to meet.
Chamber of Commerce Update- The Chair reported that she and Ms. Hendricks had participated in a
Zoom meeting with the Chamber to discuss a community Welcome Wagon to connect with new residents.
Information about the MIDC and NPFH program would be included in the Chamber's next bulletin. There was
discussion regarding the possible development of a slogan, the welcoming program, donations for the Human
Rights Club welcoming program, the development of a new proclamation and how best to share messages of
tolerance. Ms. G. Wilson and Selectman Cotton noted that there could be challenges with the Committee
developing a slogan, but could instead consider an acknowledgement.
Endorse School Committee Resolution-
MOTION: Ms. Johnson-Graham made a motion to endorse the Mashpee Public Schools' Anti-Racism
Resolution. Mr. Klein seconded the motion. All voted unanimously.
Member Sharing-The Chair referenced the letter she sent to the Editor regarding an incident at Lowell
Holly Reservation, noting that she submitted the letter in her own name and not as a representative of the
Committee. It was the Chair's opinion, however, that such incidents required immediate reaction and
encouraged Committee members to consider also making statements. Ms. S. Wilson agreed with the
importance in timing to address such situations and inquired whether the Committee could endorse the Chair's
statement. Ms. Johnson-Graham was in agreement with Ms. S. Wilson, adding that the Committee should take
a stand on such matters. The Chair agreed to draft a statement that she would share with the Committee by
email. Ms. Nadeau suggested that the Committee's statement could serve as a follow up to the Chair's original
statement and Mr. Kupferman added that it could be a good time to inform the public about the existence and
efforts of the Committee. The Chair agreed that the public was not aware of the Committee. A motion was
made to support and endorse the Chair's letter, but some members expressed preference to first view the
statement before voting, further suggesting that a motion was unnecessary to draft a statement.
Ms. S. Wilson shared her experience attending a Zoom gathering, "Conversations about Whiteness."
NEW BUSINESS
Mashpee T.V.
