8
Report of the Board of Selectmen
i,
To the Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
The Board of Selectmen submit the following report to
the citizens of the Town of Mashpee for the year ending
December 31, 1960.
1960 marked the 90th anniversary of the Town of Mash -
pee. We should be proud of the fact that for almost a
century, Mashpee has been established as one of the fifteen
Y. towns in Barnstable County.
During the past year, many problems and emergencies
were encountered. Nevertheless, we are proud we have met
them by maintaining alert municipal government with the
help and cooperation of all departments.
Many people are attracted to our town by its beauties
and abundant natural resources. New construction and de-
velopment is steadily increasing and as a natural result,
population is on the rise. Growth calls for greater expendi-
tures, but with this growth, our revenue increases also. In
spite of the increase in annual expenditures, the tax rate
remained reasonable in comparison with other towns. How-
ever, a substantial increase is anticipated for the forth-
coming year.
Construction on the addition to the Samuel G. Davis
School will start soon. The delay has been caused by severe
winter weather. The temporary classrooms at the Town
Hall have worked out satisfactorily. The Town Hall facil-
ities will still be available for school use should the com-
pletion of the new construction be prolonged.
The removal of the Public Library to make room for
the school addition presents the problem of locating a new
site and making plans for the construction of a new library.
In the meantime, the school department has authorized the
use of the old cafeteria as temporary quarters for the library.
