9
stances, a lack of interest and a great deal of absenteeism
even in some elected positions. There must be more devo-
tion to duties which we have sworn to uphold if we are to
maintain a high level of local government.
Many problems were presented in 1963. However, the
records will show that the year was not without accom-
plishments and activities which indicate progress in -the
over-all planning and execution of town projects.
Many projects voted at annual town meeting have been
carried out—many to completion. The town hall has taken
on a new appearance. The front has been shingled, the
flat roof renewed, and a fine paint job done on the entire
building.
The purchase of two trucks for the Highway Depart-
ment has proven quite useful; especially the dump truck
with its new sand spreader which enabled the Highway
Department to keep our roads clear of snow and ice. Chap-
ter 81 and 90 projects were completed as per schedule,
except Meeting House Road, delayed because of weather
conditions.
A section of Route 130 was oiled and stoned. Altogether
our highways are being very well maintained.
Work started on the Mashpee Lake Flume has now been
completed.
The extension to the fire station has been completed
and now houses some very valuable equipment.
Street lights have been installed where they were
requested.
The Park Department are to be commended on the
safety measures taken at the beach at Attaquin Park as
well as other projects under their supervision. As soon as
weather permits, the comfort station will be completed.
A street map showing the zoned areas has been com-
pleted and is proving very helpful to the Planning Board
and Assessors. We are still in need of a legal map of the
town, which we hope will be forthcoming in the near future.
