6 <br /> In 1833 the natives presented their Proclamation to the <br /> Governor and Legislature of the Commonwealth of Massa- <br /> chusetts. <br /> In 1870, however, the Legislature finally voted to incorp- <br /> orate the area as a town and grant it local Self-Government. <br /> In commemoration of that event, the town's people in Mash- <br /> pee, and in particular the persons of Wampanoag descent <br /> are sponsoring a Centennial Celebration. This will com- <br /> mence about July 25 & 26, 1970, and continue for some weeks <br /> thereafter. <br /> :a I am honored to have been appointed by the Selectmen <br /> as Chairman of the Centennial Committee, and it is in that <br /> capacity that I address you.I am also Chairman of the Mash- <br /> !1 pee Historic Commission, which certainly has direct interest <br /> { in the Centennial ceremonies and associated activities to be <br /> discussed below. <br /> i <br /> "THE CENTENNIAL PROGRAM" <br /> By their nature commemorative ceremonies are tempo- <br /> rary, even fleeting in their affect. They may adequately serve <br /> jto call attention to an important fact of history. They may <br /> afford enjoyment and it is to be hoped, food for thought, to <br /> local citizens, summer people, and tourists, and it is for these <br /> reasons that the centennial celebration is being undertaken, <br /> but the purpose of the sponsors (stated later) requires action <br /> to attain more,enduring results. Therefore it is intended that <br /> the ceremonies shall be used as a springboard to introduce <br /> two educational projects. <br /> A. A NATURE CENTER <br /> 1. Located at the head of Mashpee Wakeby <br /> Lake <br /> B. THE MASHPEE WAMPANOAG MUSEUM <br /> 1. Located on Route #130 <br /> 2. In a restored structure dating back to late " <br /> 1700 (a) To be restored by Town & H.U.D. <br /> funds <br /> The Nature Center shall consist of a Bird Sanctuary, <br /> Self-guided Trails with exhibitions of plant life, holly and <br /> indigenous life of the forest. A Natural Ampitheater will be <br /> located within the park as well as an authentic replica of a <br /> Wampanoag village. (Pilgrim contact period.) Conservation <br /> project within the park was initiated with the help of the <br />
