17
Report of the Highway Surveyor
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
and Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
I take great pleasure in submitting this annual plus six
months report to the Honorable Board of Selectmen, Consti-
tuents and Taxpayers of the Town of Mashpee.
In this, report I will attempt to give you the complete
resume and the accomplishments of the Highway Depart-
ment for the. year 1973 and the first six months of 1974.
Due to the American way of life and the understanding
that we should have at least two cars per family and to the
increase in families moving into this area and the way we
have spanned our developments to all four points of the
compass we now must consider the mode of transportation
to connect the many developments that we have and are
constructing.
This heavy influx of traffic has greatly increased the
maintenance of our road system and in many cases hasten
the need for construction with the growing pains and the
heavy burdens that go along with them.
The Department has attempted to give you a service
equal to any highway department on Cape Cod.
The Department now consists of five full-time men.
These five men have been assigned to service and maintain
forty miles of accepted Town roads. In addition they are
also assigned to Town Landings and various other Town
owned parcels which must be maintained. With the addi-
tional.maintenance problems and construction projects we
were forced to hire three part-time men to assist with our
State and County Aid projects and snow and ice removal.
Due to the lack of equipment and inability to hire de-
cent private equipment for snow and ice removal we were
handicapped to a certain extent as far as our plowing and
sanding of private developments was concerned. However,
we were able to maintain our main arteries and Town ac-
cepted roads. We do anticipate in the future to plow and
sand developments and private ways.
