5.'SI
is
installation of electricity and telephone service. It is an-
ticipated that this area will develop quickly and produce
substantial income for the town.
Our tax can still be classified as "attractive". However,
7 the Board of Selectmen feel the strong need for a revaluation
} of properties. As a corporation relying almost solely on real
estate taxes as a source of income, we cannot afford to over-
look the backbone of our financial structure.
J This year, the citizens are being asked to adopt a Zoning
i r . + By-Law for the town. The proposed by-law was purposely
drawn up in a simple, uncomplicated form. Upon adoption of
the By-Law, variations and modifications can be made from
7 time to time as it is understandable that everyone's wishes
will not be met with the initial adoption. It is important that
j we start the framework now while there is so much undevel-
oped area in the town. Mashpee possesses much of the re-
maining virgin territory on Cape Cod, and in order to guard
"against a haphazard growth and to insure increased valua-
tion of our property, we must adopt a form of control which
' will be thought of as a protective measure rather than re-
strictive.
' The Board has requested the Department of Public
Works to make an Engineering Survey of the Seconsett Is-
land Causeway, with the hopes that the survey will result
in improvements to the approach to Seconsett Island. Also,
the DPW has been requested to make a study and recom-
'{ mendations for the construction of a dam or suitable con-
' trol of water flowing from the Mashpee Lake through the
ti h
Mill Pond, and into the Herring Run.
Again, thanks are extended to the Town Officials and
Departments who have rendered their cooperation and as-
sistance in fulfilling the obligations to the Town during the
past year.
l Respectfully submitted,
CLARA L. BIGELOW, Chairman
WILLIAM W. MILLS
E LEROY M.LEROY M. AIKEN
i
v
