25
wish it had been possible to conduct more conferences. The
examining physician was paid by. the Barnstable Count '
Y
Health Department.
The immunization clinics, conducted by Dr. Fred Moore, l
were well attended. It is gratifying to see such interest in
the program. Practically all pre-school children have been
immunized against whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria,
vaccinated against smallpox and are adequately immunized
against polio.
The Board of Health allotted money for 24 school dental
clinics. A new policy had to be established, due to the in-
creased enrollment and the cost of clinics. At a meeting with
the dental advisory committee, it was decided that dental care
could be given only through the 6th grade. It was hoped that
by that time, enough dental education had taken pace so that
the youngsters would assume this responsibility for care,
themselves.
In May, Dr. George DeMello of Falmouth, examined the
teeth of 16 five year old children, who.would be entering school
in September. It was hoped this- screening would make the
mothers aware that even the 5 year olds have dental decay,
and that necessary work would be taken care of during.the
summer. There was only one child who. was not in need of
dental care.
It is my feeling that during the four years the Falmouth
Nursing Association provided nursing service to Mashpee,
there has been an increasing awareness of the importance of
health among the mothers and a sincere desire to improve
the health of their children. It is with genuine regret that a
the Association felt it had to discontinue service at the end
of 1959, for it has indeed been a pleasure and satisfaction to
work in and with the townspeople of Mashpee.
Respectfully submitted,
MARGUERITE T. KENDALL
Public Health Nurse
