+i
i
Page : .
I
Mashpee Annual Town Meeting March 6 , J9/2
Mr. Kenneth Coombs , School Principal , rose to his feet at
this point to request of the Moderator that the Town Meeting 1
at this point take up articles 21 and 22 - having to do with
school matters - as Mr . Clayton Campbell , superintendent of
schools , was present and could better explain school affairs
than anyone el-se present . This request was made due to the
fact that Mr. Campbell had two meetings the same night , and
had to go on to Sandwich for another meeting as soon as he
could be heard in Mashpee .
The Moderator, having ascertained that there were no ob-
jections from the floor to this request , gave consent .
Mr. Class , member of the School Committee :
Mr. Moderator, I would like to move that Article 21
be amended to read "c.ontract for the three year lease of"
in the place of the word "purchase . "
From the floor, and from Mr. Ehrisman came inquiries
as to the wisdom of Leasing over purchasing . Mr. Glass replied
we would save money by leasing because of state reimbursement
on leasing. It was seconded and so voted .
F. dicks spoke and said taut another advantage is that we don ' t
have to raise all this money in one year ® and at the end of
three years the yenta-1 money is applied toward purchase and we
will then own the buildings .
c
MP® CAMPBELL superintendent of schools came forward and spoke :
Ladies and gentlemen I thank you for the privilege of coming
before you to speak on these matters . It was as late as this
past Friday that I learned it was possible to lease these build-
ings because of a new law enacted in the Fall of 19"/1 . After
gaining this knowledge , it was too late to meet with the Finance
Committee and the School Committee to acquaint them with the
fact that we didn' t have to raise this $59 , 000 in one year .
I
