Wage 1-2 {
Annual Town Meeting March 6 , 19/2
Article 21 continued - Campbell speaking® j
The State has made it possible to contract for educational equip-
ment for three years and pay on it each year through the school G
- IA
budget ® Now we can do it for portable classrooms . Also contract-
ing to do it this way will amount to a purchase at the end of
three years ® This will mean an expenditure of $21 , 666 for
i
three buildings plus $1 , 34 for furniture and tie in with the main
plant ® When I make the State records for the new contract and
file them in July with the Department of Education, it will mean
that 15% comes back to the Town® Under Chapter 10 you will see
that we receive considerable monies from the State ® In 11/3 this
will be the salve ® If the Town votes we may include $2.1 , 666 in
the school budget and 15 percent will be reimbursed ® the
following year it will be the same ® Therefore it will not be
necessary to raise it in any one year. This will make a differ-
ence of !0 cents or more on this year ' s tax rate ® We could push
the panic button and say let ' s build a brand new school rightnt now.
It takes time to study and plan, and time has run out , We :need
..more room today , I , then, have this request to bring through
the school committee and your Finance Committee to you people ®
We want to bring our kindergarten across the street ® I have
watched , and it scares me to death to see these little people
having to go back and forth crossing that busy road . In the
main school , where classes have to be held dow-nstairs next
to the basketball courts we have bad teaching conditions ,, We want r
to remove the academic classrooms from down there and put dorm
there instead the art room, and other such activities not needing
concentration and freedom from noise and confusion , I think that
from three to five years this will help us ® by that time we will
have completed new studies of our needs ; possibly even some new
building . We are getting new students all the time . I assure
i
you I shall keep down all costs possible . There are certain things
I can' t keep down -- .such as tuit`_on, and transportation:. We are
now paying $153C per pupil ; considerably more than we paid sears
ago . Your school budget reflects this this particular year . I
hope you will go along with me and I assure you I will do every-
thing I can to keep expenses down.
