-
i
1
Wage 19
Annual Town Meeting March 6 , 1972
1
;i
article 24 continued - Mrs . Griffin speaking :
which will enable us to buy available Ian ' 711en it comes on the
market. Most developers don' t care anything about the environment r'
of Mashpee. j
Costa : Does it have to be $10, 000. 00 this year?
Mrs . Griffin: We have to put out a lot of money. We don ' t
have any.
Costa : I think she does have a point. This request was in last
year. We keep turning it down® We put $15 , 000.00 into the
stabilization. fund .
Hicks : Some of this money is reimbursable. We have to put up
the Money in the first instance . As much as 50% is reimbursable®
I would like to make a motion this money be raised and appropriated®
Garland : $10,000. 00 was appropriated 12st year. The stabilization
fund goes for future Town needs . . . .new municipal buildings ; new
schools , new fire and police station. . . the stabilization fund
was for these purposes - not to be put into the bank and allowed
to lie there . An appropriation of this size will reflect on the
total tax rate this year. Next year, there will be a large amount
of available funds and this money will not all have to be raised
and appropriated . Next year will be a better time to transfer j
money to this hard working committee.
Mr. Aiken: I would like to remind the people of how much and
how fast our lands has been disappearing and made unavailable to }
the people . This $10, 000.00 will be well spent to acquire more
land for the town. Even our roads and ancient ways are fast
disappearing. I would rather see $10,000. 00 invested in retaining
these lands . I would call it a darn good investment.
Lehmann: I cannot Delp but agree . We need a lot more. The
thing we are asked to do is to make money available when they need
money to buy lands .
Ticks : If money is set aside for this purpose , they can' t use it
for anything else.
Lehmann: When land is can the market ® or it is known it is avail-
able ® it doesn' t last :long. . . . it is soon snapped up. We must
have it so the money can be made available when it is needed .
