4
Pae 33 c. Annual_ Town Meeting - Mashpee Monday March S, 1973
(KD® 'Connell speaking) has been found over a quarter of a mile away
where it has filtered through sand. How many wells have had to be
moved, because bubbles have appeared on top of the water, resulting
from the use of detergents and other wastes? I'
Incineration is another method. This results in air pollution.
But by the methods here proposed, land and air pollution - no
burning chemical odors , no unsightly messes to see.
The method of trash disposal proposed here is not a new one,
but it is relatively new to the United States, and to this area.
There are many communities and European cities currently using this
method. Resulting compost spread on lava beds has resulted in
beauty spots of grass and flowers .
Mashpee 's problem is not yet critical, but in five years it
certainly will be in terms of cost. Mashpee will get these services
at no cost to the To
Naturally, the company cannot operate for nothing. At the
present time the tentative cost will be around $6.00 (per ton)
per town, which is cheaper than any town could do on its own.
You raise the question of whether Mashpee would become the
garbage capitol of Cape Cod. The answer a_s"no"- Mashpee will become
the ecological capitol of the Cape . Everybody is now concerned with
ecology - and pollution. The politicians are talking a big order
for remedying the situation but doing very little . The method
proposed here is total reclaimation.
You will get no noise , no vermin, no smell , no gulls . There
E
will be no extremes of ground or air temperatures, but the germs
will all be killed, and the residue will make good useable compost
and topsoil. Twenty towns in Massachusetts and two in New 'Hampshire
are now negotiating with AENCD for these services.
