Page 33b. Annual Town Meeting - Mashpee Monday Larch S, 1973
C
(Peters speaking) I can assure you that nothing about it resembles
a dump. Nothing resembles trash. To see it code in and disappear
I
like magic is really something. The noise is rile. There are no sea ,
gulls or rodents, no trash and debris blowing about. Everything was
beautifully maintained, and clean.
Question from the floor: How lucrative is this operation to
NCO? What do they make?
Peters : It goes without saying that AENCO has to make something
out of it, or how could they stay in business?
Question® Roes the Town know how lucrative to the developer?
We are not going to vote on this tonight, are ire?
Peters : We are not awarding the contract tonight. By the time
we come to the state of awarding the contract, you may be sure all
the people will be satisfied with what it concludes and contains.
Question: Are only the Board of Selectmen going to be the
final judges of all this?
K.D.O'Connell: The Selectmen to date have had the assistance
of two engineers, James Bain and Tim. Hennigan as to what this comprises,
and we have available the counsel of the State health authorities
as well as the Department of Natural Resources and others as to what
is involved. Sure the project will be lucrative for AENCO. Nobody
invests millions in a business venture without the expectation o
making a profit . This could mean as much as a $200,000 profit to
the company. They sell some of the by-products, such as Kin and
other materials used by industry. Presently there is a use for almost
every single item that may be gleaned from trash. Ninety percent
of the garbage and trash will become compost, which in turn will
make topsoil. Ten percent will be clean fill as presently defined
by the General Laws. There will be no problems of residue. under no
contract this Town enters into would we agree to landfill another
to 's trash. We would be accepting residue for compost. To date no
value has been placed on compost. Primarily, AENCO has not dealt
in any area so devoid of topsoil. It could amount to $6.00 to $8.00
a cubic yard.
I
There are three methods of waste disposal. One is sanitary
landf-tll, which leads to ground pollution. The residue from landfill
