Page 3 . Annual Town Meeting - Mashpee Monday March 5, 1973.
e
43
Article 23 continued: O'Connell speaking:
Y
The word "disposal" means we are taking disposal from other towns.
However, there will be no residue . There will be no residue from
any other towns buried in the Town of Mashpee . There will be no
land fall operation. There will be composting disposal. Listen,
the Federal Government has come up Vith its own plan and
Massachusetts is still dithering around. The Board of Health will
have to approve. We must go by what we have seen and heard.
Mr. O'Connell here cited the interest of Wally Shearard, the
Astronaut, who said, "no one is going to invest in something
that will not work. "
After a few more words between Mr. O'Connell and Mr. Griffin,
Mr. Griffin wanted to know if there was only one other plant
in the country and we would make a second.
K.D.O'Connell® There is one in Delaware and there will be one
here.
Griffin, Roared No! ! ! ! !
Ehrismant We have been working on this for a year. Composting
is certainly far superior to both incineration and this land
fill. It will certainly let you have more fresh air. And as for
burying it, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts said there has to be
a better answer. This always poses the possibility of poisins
seeping into the water supply. That is why the Commonwealth o
Massachusetts is coming up with more stringent regulations
each. year. That is why the Town Dump costs $70,000.00. What is this
plant going to look like? It will be very attractive and beautify the
landscape, compare this picture with the picture of our present
dump. This installation will represet $2, 504000.00 invested
in AENCOIS money. Their money, not ours. On top of this there
r
will be the property tax assessment which will bring in much
added revenue to the town. There will be no expense to Mashpee
for their disposal problem and other towns will be paying $6.00
a ton. It will be a good l oking park, and our area will be odor
free, there will be nn rats. It will be a definite asset. I
K.D.O'Connell read a statement by Alden E. Cousen, to the
i
effect that the State is now preparing a master plan. "We mentioned a
f
i
k
