} r
V Mashpee inclusion and Diversity Committee
16 (ireat Neck RoadWorth
Nashyee, MA 02649
his service. This would have been his last meeting. We wish him the best and he
has elected to go to Georgetown University next year, very exciting for him.
Chairwoman Stevenson wanted to congratulate Mr. Fand, who has been elected
to the Housing Board. He ran uncontested and he elaborated on what his tasks
were. Chair thanked him for taking the interest in serving the community. Ms.
Stevenson also wanted to thank all those who ran unopposed, Congratulations!
Ms. Stevenson also wanted to mention the campaign for Marie Stone, that she
had the pleasure of working on. Marie lost the election by marginal votes. Politics
aside, Chairwoman was moved by her experience with the Tribal members
through this effort. She will talk later about Race Amity and getting together, but
she was so pleased to be part of the experience. Ms. Stevenson was remembering
the lovely tea that was made, a Native American dish she enjoyed, and the icing
on the cake was a necklace Marie gifted. It was a beautiful, polished wampum
necklace that was gifted to those who worked on the campaign. Chairwoman's
point is, the more we relate and spend time with one another, the more we see
the value of each other's cultures. She admired the family connection especially.
Ms. Keliinui wanted to note that Marie's mother made all the necklaces, and her
mother is one of the beloved elders of the Tribe. She was so moved by all the
support her daughter was receiving that she wanted to give her thanks. Gifting is
a large part of their culture.
Ms. Johnson-Graham wanted to mention the quahog shell is fished, then made
into chowder, and the shell is tumbled and made into jewelry. Wampum was used
as a way of currency, and the darker the purple the more it was worth. Gift giving
day was every day.
Ms. Stevenson is grateful for the experience. She was happy to mention a
member of the Tribe will be joining the School Committee. She also made note of
the tiny percentage of Mashpee voters, 14% of voters, that turned up on election
2
