Town of Mashpee
Shellfish Commission 16 Great Neck Road
Mashpee, MA, 02649
MINUTES
Shellfish Commission
Tuesday October 13th, 2020 7:00 PM
Mashpee Town Hall, Waquoit Meeting Room
Call in number: 508-539-1449
Present: Bill Holmes, Peter Thomas, Darryl Christenson, Steve Marques, Dick Cook
Convene Meeting: Mr. Holmes called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM
Public Comment
Buddy Pocknett was present to say he was interested in a role as Tribal Liaison to the
Commission.
Approval of Minutes N/A
Department of Natural Resources Shellfish Constable Report
Unfortunately Bay scallops in Mashpee hasn't been successful, probably not a good place for
them.
Town of Mashpee had 11 million quahogs. Hoping to have 100% of clams out of nursery stage
& in the water by the end of next week. Due to the fact that 11 million was a bit ambitious for a
purchase, we saw a lot of mortality. 4-5 million never made it past size 2. I wouldn't want to do
it again with the infrastructure we have. Mashpee is really riot a place for tons of nets in an area
that never goes dry. Plan on going forward to buy bigger seeds that can survive broadcasting.
What we do have looks very good. Finance committee gave approval for transfer of funds to buy
a new boat. We should get it beginning of December.
Mr. Holmes wanted to clarify how much we lost of the 1 lmillion. Constable said we ended up
with about 3.5 million between what we traded and what died. How does that compare to last
year? Constable said there's a difference between clams in the ground and clams surviving. We
suffered 100% mortality in some areas. I don't have numbers of what is alive from last year. My
thought is to buy 4 million larger and have 4 million survive.
Mr. Thomas said he's glad to hear we're getting bigger seed for a better survival rate. I like your
philosophy. Glad to hear we're going to singles for oysters. I'd like to talk about having one
building, and other things that we've been pushing for. Glad to see we're making progress.
Mr. Thomas also mentioned perhaps add some commercial days go clean up little river.
Mr. Pocknett asked if we wanted to move them to another location or have fisherman just get
them out of there?
