It's very preliminary, but the grant has to
be applied for by a 503c,the Town could be a partner. It's not feasible this year, but she spoke with
Catherine from DPW who will put some feelers out to see if anyone would be interested.
Chuck Gasior had also reached out to the Selectman's Office about a Boston Globe article on innovative
methods to eliminate food waste. It claims you save an average of$7 for every$1 invested in kitchen
food waste reduction practices, (if these numbers are correct)would they consider a meeting of Mashpee
restaurant owners, Stop and Shop, Roche Bros, and Willowbend, etc..to explore the concept of potential
savings. This is along the idea of a forum to discuss waste reduction.
Mr. Talbot brought printouts with information regarding the banning of plastics, including some statistics
regarding polystyrene leeching into food. These were talking points to promote the ban.
Ms. Scharfenberg suggested we ask the Environmental Coalition to help gather some research,Ms.
Cadoret said that would be great.
Dr.Venkatesan was introduced to the group and presented information about her organization,
Sustainable Practices, and The Cape Plastic Bottle ban. Sustainable Practices has been successful in
helping 11 towns throughout The Cape ban single-use plastic bottles. She went into detail about what the
Municipal Plastic Bottle Ban entails, as well as how her group would assist Mashpee in filing to go into
effect 1/l/2021. Part of that strategy includes the collection of signatures and 2 letters of support sent
every week for 10 weeks. The group discussed various alternatives to plastic bottles, including potential
water stations on Town property. Ms. Cadoret recapped what needs to be done and noted that MEC
would spearhead this.
NEW BUSINESS
• Local and State Proposed Bans: Plastic Straw,Expanded Polystyrene, and Helium Balloons
Motion: Mr. Talbot moved to adopt a revised plastic straw ban based on the comments
from the last meeting. Mr. Cummings seconded.
Vote: 4-1 motion passed
The group continued the discussion from the last meeting regarding whether or not to bring the
EPS ban to the May Town meeting, or wait until fall. Ms. Waygan suggested that whatever is
decided tonight, reach out to Santuit Pond Association for support at the Town meeting.
