Other items not reasonably anticipated by the Chair
Ashley Fisher, Director of Natural Resources, presented a plan to improve the water quality of
Santuit Pond. The Town and Tribe are working with The Army Corps of Engineers to see if it's
feasible to dredge Santuit Pond. They are assessing if it's suitable to dredge and deposit the
soils on land, putting it in various areas to create emergent wetlands. If it is feasible, then next
step would be to bring it to the Board of Selectmen, Tribe, and to the public. If the answer is
yes, the Partnership Program (federal grant with the Tribe) would allow this to take place. They
have done this in other ponds, it's created wetlands and meadows, and brought back native
plantings.
If feasible, this is estimated to remove 90% of residential phosphorous. It's 100% federally
funded, The Town would fund to clear the northwest section of the pond prior to the dredging.
It's estimated about 5ft deep would have to be removed. The Army Corp can get this permitted.
Mr. Fudala and Mr. Lyons asked if there's been anymore thought given to Phoslock. Ashley
confirmed it is not approved by The State, and we don't have time to wait for that approval
process. If feasible, the Army Corps can get this done now.
Mr. Fudala asked if part of the feasibility study could include finding out how much of that area
needs to be sewered. Ashley said yes, that is part of the study.
Andy Gottlieb said this is toxic, we need to solve both ends of the problem.
Ms. Malone asked when this will be done, Ashley answered the end of December.
Mr. Fudala said let's wait and see what they come up with.
Mr. Fudala asked about the conditions of other ponds regarding milfoil and cyanobacteria
blooms. Ashley said there's milfoil in John's Pond.
Mr. Dunn asked when we will start looking at all this.
Mr. Gottlieb followed up by saying the plan we have now is for nitrogen. Ponds need the
attention they deserve, it's all towns on Cape, including Mashpee. This is the beginning of
looking at the ponds.
Andy Gottlieb announced there was a lawsuit filed against the State and Towns of Mashpee and
Barnstable by the Conservation Law Foundation, regarding Title 5 failures. We will be defending
our interests.
Correspondence N/A
Adjournment
Motion: Mr. Lyons moved to adjourn, Mr. Dunn seconded.
Vote: 5-0-0 motion passed
Meeting adjourned at 6:12pm.
Respectfully submitted,
-Katrm yving
Board Secretary
