She
attended a reception for a concert series that co-sponsors a performance. Ms. Stevenson
recognized him from the zoom. He is African American and was brought up in Duxburyas
one of onlyfive families in the entire town. They invited herto attend the performance, part of
the musicwas an African American female composer who died in the 50's.
One of the key discussions on the zoom was Critical Race Theory. We need to be alert to
this. Some towns have vocal groups that come into school committees and select board
committees questioning the education. There may be a small vocal group, butthen there are
advocates and that seems to be working for now.The Mashpee School Committee got an
award forth is.
Sometimes Madam Chairreceives phone calls from different groups/peoplewhoare looking
to get advice. She encourages involvementwith the coalition. Rightnow in Provincetown and
Sandwich these differentgroups are organizing.Awoman from Pembroke called about
inclusion. She told Ms. Stevenson thatthe Select Board decided they should create a DEI
committee and they thought itwould be nice. However, a small group came out and said they
don't need that and started on this Critical Race Theory issue. It became very intense so it
was tabled to revisit at the next meeting. It was then that people like thiswoman spoke up
and asked what they thought diversity meant. She was representing the communityof
disabled adults and children, theyare a part of the diversity. She clarified these committees
don'tsolely focus on race. The Select Board voted to create a committee, and she is
volunteering to do it.
A month ago a similarinstance happened in Dennis-Yarmouth.The School Board has a
subcommittee with DEI to issue statement of diversity. Mashpee has done that. Our School
Committee, Board of Selectman, and School Board have done that. A small vocal group
came up and said they don't need to make a statement like that because DY isn't racist.
People advocated saying that isn'twhat this is about. It is a broader picture that needs to be
elaborated on. It is a great support system on a numberof levels.
Ms. Nadeau wanted to know whattime the picnicwas Sunday,August22na
It is from 11:30a.m.-1:30p.m. at the Buzzards Bay Community Park nearthe railroad bridge.
Anyone involved in the committees can come. It is not a formal meeting.
2
