Town of Mashpee
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Telephone - (508) 539-1438
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—April, 22, 2021
The Mashpee Historical Commission Zoom meeting was called to order by Ava Costello, Chair, at 4:07
pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Chair; Richard DeSorgher, Brian Hyde, Rosemary Burns Love
and Nancy Soderberg, and Brian Weeden
Commissioners not Present: Joan Tavares-Avant
WAR MEMORIAL PROJECT
Ava Costello reported that the contractor VHB has let us down —We now have to get a new Engineering
Plan at an additional cost of$100,000. It has only been a year since the Proposal went in. Richard
thinks Catherine will go back to see if we can get another company to bid on the project. Brian Hyde
feels we should go back to the Town Meeting to get more money. The sign for the Memorial is up; the
pergola is up; the foundation is in; but we do not have the monument. Catherine is trying to see if she
can get a lower price on the engraving which was the highest cost.
Brian Hyde- Since the 2020 Celebration was cancelled, maybe we could get those funds transferred to
the Monument Funding. He talked to Catherine, and found out that the Town
now owns that cemetery because the Lakewood HOA did not pay the taxes due. Catherine said there
are regulations as to how we repair the stones, and we may have to go to the CPA to request additional
funds
Rosemary quoted from the Annual Town Meeting, January 1975. Funds were set aside to clear the
various cemeteries. Richard asked if there are other cemeteries that need attention. We have decided
to assess all the cemeteries to see what needs to be done. Catherine said the DPW would do the
landscaping, but we need an expert to repair the stones.
MOTION: Rosemary made a motion that we have a study done to assess the needs of all the
cemeteries in Town, and we would begin with the Lakewood Cemetery. We intend to hire an expert to
assess the costs of repairing gravestones. Richard seconded the motion. Rosemary does not think we
