-2-
Ava mentioned that there was a very large fire on Collins Lane recently in an abandoned house. Ava
questioned the vulnerability of the Archives, and how much insurance is on our building. The Town
Manager was adamant in having an inventory of everything we have that is of value. Richard said that
when he wrote his recent article on Ann Tanneyhill, he came across a signed poem by Langston Hughes,
which is valuable, and Ava commented that it easily could be sent to the National Museum of Civil Rights
in Washington, DC. Ava asked Rodney if we could hire a professional Archivist to go through all of our
holdings, and he seemed very supportive. Ava also asked for more fire-proof file cabinets, and he
expressed an interest in providing those too.
BOOK SALES
Nancy and Rosemary discussed book sales. Nancy delivered 25 copies of Mashpee in Words and
Pictures to Isaiah Thomas. Richard made a motion to sell Rosemary's book, Mashpee in Words and
Pictures for a revised cost of$10/copy to all the bookstores. Motion was seconded by Nancy and voted
Unanimously.
2019 HISTORICAL PRESERVATION AWARD
MOTION: Richard made a motion that we give the 2019 award it to the Nature Land Conservancy. They
have donated the three islands- Keith, Jefferson and Cleveland -to be kept natural in perpetuity; and
therefore they should be nominated. The motion was seconded by Nancy, and it was voted
Unanimously.
Ava and Richard feel that we should be designating rivers with signage. Richard feels that we could work
with the Conservation Commission to place signage to identify the Mashpee rivers.
MOTION: Richard made a motion that the Conservation Commission should place signage at the rivers
and Rosemary seconded it. She felt that we should do the research to come up with the documented
names. Richard and Rosemary agreed to work on the naming project, including names of roadways.
Richard and Rosemary felt that the names for new roads should be passed through the MHC for our
consideration.
Ava set the next MHC meeting date to be June 10th at 4:OOpm.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30pm.
\•lifil_ _GC.--1-Ce
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Graham, Sr. Clerk
