'Vl"h ee TncCusion and Diversity Committee
16 Great Neck Road North
Aashpee, Massachusetts 02649
help her decide which ones to keep or delete. They will then discuss which ones to
enlarge to display in different areas of Town.
On the topic of Race Amity Day, Ms. Johnson-Graham would like to note the time
conflict with the tribal performances and the council meeting. Out of respect to her and
the members of the tribe, she would like to have the drum and dance performances in
the beginning to allow enough time as well as incorporate more people into the dances.
OLD BUSINESS
1. Sue Wilson
LOA Policy is being researched by Mr. Collins, Town Manager.
2. Proposed Immigration Project
a. Input from Katie Hennessy
Ms. Hennessy was present to discuss what trainings officers receive in regards to
speaking other languages. She noted it is not part of their curriculum, if there was
interest they would have to take it up on their own, whether it be Portuguese or
Spanish etc. They currently utilize Google translator, not the most effective, but it
does what it needs. There is a system in place, reverse 911, you can speak with
someone in any language around the world. Languages that aren't prevalent are
harder to cater to, but the services are available. She knows the Community
College has programs. She thinks it would be beneficial. There are not any
bilingual officers in Mashpee, but local surrounding towns have officers who speak
other languages and they help out when needed.
Ms. Johnson-Graham noted Spanish and Portuguese are very widespread around
town.
Mr. Kupferman noted Portuguese and Spanish are not that similar.
Ms. Hennessey noted there is Brazilian Portuguese and people who are from
Portugal. If anyone had any further questions, reach out to her.
b. Meetings and proposals in progress with Becky Field, School Staff, Library,
etc. Budget under revision.
Ms. DeBoer mentioned Ms. Purdy is the teacher liaison. Another outlet for funding
could be a request to the Cultural Council.
2
