.►lasCibee Inc ton
and Diversity Committee
16 Great Neck Road Worth
94ashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Ms. Stevenson did communicate with the Human Rights Club at the school, she hasn't
received an answer yet. The Human Rights Club sent a male and female to the Select
Board in support of Women's History Month. She would like to ask for a student registered
voter to stand up in support, or students to hand out flyers.
Ms. DeBoer does not have a problem with a student standing in support. She is unsure of
the legalities in handing out documents.
Mr. Kupferman knows Town Meeting allows the handing out of flyers. He is wondering if
you need to be a registered voter to speak. He wrote in the column that this is important for
our future leaders. Having young women or students from the school system speaking to
issues would be powerful. He plans on speaking briefly.
Ms. DeBoer said there is a section of non-voters, it is a public meeting, you just can't vote.
Ms. Stevenson noted it takes people in power to initiate change and acceptance. She
thought it was very significant to have a boy and a girl represent. Mr. Kupferman then
raised it to the Town Manager, whose response was that he never thought about it before.
Chairwoman is not criticizing, it's just a reality. People in power don't always think about the
needs, because it was just not brought to their attention. She was impressed that it went to
the Select Board, there was discussion, and then two men on that Board stood in support.
There is the need for a gender neutral term. It was more encouraging to see the men who
stood in support. As the Chair of this Committee she could speak, but she feels if a man
stands up on behalf, it's supporting women even more.
Mr. Klein stated you only have to be a resident to vote at the Town Meeting, you don't have
to be a registered voter. Also, you are able to hand stuff out at Town Meeting.
Mr. Kupferman asked Ms. DeBoer, in her capacity as Superintendent, does she have an
opinion or would she be able to speak?
Ms. DeBoer generally only speaks on school issues, but she does like the idea of the male
and female student, particularly if they are of voting age. She agrees, it should be changed,
and doesn't have an issue speaking on it.
3. Proposed Immigration Project
Madam Chair thanked Ms. DeBoer for helping organize this. Currently, they are looking into
all the possibilities of where this project could be displayed.
4
