1`llV Ifl)I 1/I:.
Aashbee IncCusion ancCDiversity Committee
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Aassachusetts 02649
Ms. Johnson Graham wanted to ask about Race Amity Day. On behalf of the tribal
drummers, next year, can they perform closer to the start of the ceremony? She wants to
get the group more involved with a round dance and a smoke dance. Tribal members
wanted to be more involved but they had to leave for council meeting, which is always the
second Sunday of every month.
Ms. Stevenson will be flexible for next year.
Chairwoman apologizes ahead of time, as she will not be here for the November 09, 2021
meeting. She is leaving in two weeks for Africa. She plans to go to the Apartheid Museum.
She is looking for feedback on how to conduct the next meeting, or if it should be canceled.
Mr. Kupferman thinks we stick with the schedule, abbreviated or not, having a speaker
would be great.
Mr. Klein can contact Nell Fields. She could possibly participate as a guest speaker on
November 09. Also, discuss the outcome of Town Meeting.
Mashpee has two immigration lawyers. It is her hope one could provide a person's back
story, but they never responded. Madam Chair does know of two women lawyers she will
get in touch with.
Mr. Klein will see Nell Fields the following morning, and if she cannot attend, this will allow
Ms. Stevenson time to pursue other women guest speakers.
2. Guest Speaker: Becky Field Immigrant/Refugee Project
Ms. Field is thankful to be here and amazed at all the good work happening in Mashpee.
Mashpee is an example for many towns. For the last ten years she has been
photographing immigrants and refugees in New Hampshire. It started when hateful things
were written on some homes in Concord and these were people who had just escaped
violence in their own countries. Now, here they were, encountering all this hate in America.
In 2011-12 she was planning to use her camera as a way to say let's treat people better
than that.
This project is the only photography she does. She exhibits her work, speaks to groups,
and has published books. Different Roots, Common Dreams and Finding Home are the
titles of her two books. She interviewed 40 people and includes their picture and their story.
She is not in a position to talk about faith, new skills, and teaching of children, but she is
able to uplift other people's stories.
6
