1
1
' end of the existing float. This reconfiguration will provide t4.5' of water at MLW for the entire
' length of the boat docked on the outside. It will also allow for the berthing of smaller boats—a
tender, day sailor, canoes or kayaks —on the inside of the float where water depths vary between
2.7 and 2.5' at MLW. Two free-standing tie-off piles are also proposed 6.5' at each end of the
' float, but no further into the waterway.
The result of the redesign is a more secure berth for the owner's boat with no additional
' infringement on navigation space. And, when the boat is not a its berth, there will be
approximately 8 additional feet of navigation space. This extra space for the public is the trade
off for the 32 sq. ft. of additional float area, the existing float being 160 sq. ft. and the proposed
' being 192 s.f. Further, no additional piles are required in intertidal or near-subtidal bottom for
the reconfiguration.
' The new structure will extend t64' beyond MHW and±24' beyond MLW.
The project also proposes a perched beach. The primary purpose of this feature is to retain the
' cover for the toe stones of the revetment. The construction employs three 2' diameter coconut
fiber logs set as a pyramid with the two lower logs in a shallow trench. The outer logs can be
pre-plugged with Spartina patens. The logs will be set just landward of the salt marsh. Once the
' logs are in place, clean sand fill of compatible grain size with the native beach material will be
used to fill the area behind the logs.
' The logs work to retain and build the beach by retaining sand moved by wave run-up while
allowing water to drain back through them. Because we will fill them to entrapment capacity at
' the time of installation, no impact on long shore sediment transport is anticipated.
' Impacts
The project will have no impacts on surface or groundwater quantity. The reduction in CCA
' treated materials should result in beneficial impacts to surface water quality and prevention of
pollution interests.
' Open work pile-supported piers are not deemed adverse to storm damage or flood prevention
interests.
' The site is not mapped by MNHP as habitat for animals of concern. Neither listed plants nor
animals have been observed in the proposed work areas for the site.
1 •
