-2-
has gone through training meetings, and now Pedro will be conducting schoolhouse
tours, together with Nancy and Richard. We look forward to having him join us.
Brian Hyde introduced the members of the Historical Commission to John and Sam, as
they might not be familiar with the work that each member has done.. Richard reported
on a very nice phone call from a visitor who said that Nancy had given a wonderful
presentation to her grandchildren who thoroughly enjoyed their tour.
Then Brian Hyde reported on his work at the Historic District Commission. He does
need to have a few more volunteers as they have multiple projects to review before the
commission, and they have struggled to get a quorum in order to hold meetings. They
would like to have a member from the Tribe volunteer
Richard mentioned that they had to go before the HDC to get their approval for the
addition of the woodshed to the schoolhouse, and that he was working with the
Mashpee High School students to get the woodshed done. The plan is that the
construction work will begin on the woodshed in September.
Richard mentioned that he had ordered a new sign for identifying the location of the
schoolhouse to be installed along Route 130. He reported about the progress on the
War Memorial which will be moved to Mashpee from Vermont in late fall, and installed,
weather permitting. He also mentioned the DPW would be installing two Adirondack
chairs in the park.
Rosemary mentioned that she was working on research on Rock Landing Road, on the
Mashpee Baptist Church, also research on the Austin Lot. She often will assist with
researching answers to questions the public has about Mashpee history. Presently, she
had been working on some research on the South Mashpee Salt Works which had been
manned by prisoners back in Revolutionary War times.
Richard asked for a report on where we are with the planning of the Historical
Preservation Awards; 2019 to the Native Land Conservancy, 2020 to Rosemary Burns,
and 2021 to the Town Seal Committee. Mary Bradbury offered her help in planning an
event in the Community Park. We definitely appreciate her coming to the Archives this
morning and going over the many details for us to handle to make it work. Ann reported
that she is working through the many items that need to be handled. Commission
members will assist with the many details in putting together this event.
Richard thanked Sam Drysdale, Reporter for the Mashpee Enterprise, and John Cotton.
Liaison, for coming. He announced that the date for the next meeting will be Thursday,
August 4, 2021. He made a motion to adjourn, and Brian seconded it, at 5:22pm.
Respectfully submitted
Ann Graham, Sr. Clerk
