Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Telephone- (5 ) 53 -14.
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—June 2, 2022
Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Ava Costello, Chair, at
4:00 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, Brian Weeden, and Nancy
Soderberg. Rosemary Burns Love, Joan Tavares-Avant and Brian Hyde telephoned in.
Richard DeSorgher gave us an update on his current projects. Ava and he met with
Catherine Laurent to go over the Monument project. The bid is going to Baker Monu-
ments in Falmouth, MA. The granite will be coming from Vermont and they say it could
take six to eight months. It could be delayed until spring if cold weather sets in early.
Cemeteries —The name of the Lakewood Cemetery should probably revert back to the
Bourne Cemetery. Catherine feels that we need to go Town Meeting and have the
official names voted on and accepted. Rosemary will share her research on Mashpee
cemeteries when she returns from Florida... Rosemary informed us that the original
Avant Cemetery was listed as the Coombs Cemetery. She will go through her records
when she returns and give us her report. Richard would like to present this information
at the October Town Meeting. Catherine is going to have the Bourne Cemetery
surveyed first, and then meet with the Child's Tree Company who will do the necessary
clean-up of the trees, and then the fencing will go up, and then the stones will be
replaced upright and cleaned.
The School House — Brad Tripp, from the DPW, is checking on the installation of the
electrical wiring, and hopefully the air conditioning will be installed this summer.
Richard and Nancy worked on the 3rd grade tours, and they had all five classes go
through. They coordinated the tours with the Indian Museum so the groups were split
and the students and teachers got to visit and learn about the Wampanoag history in
their town and what it was like to go to school in the 1850s. Richard is having some
issues with the building of the woodshed. It has been impossible to get the wood
shingles, so Cather will check with some of her suppliers to see if she can get them.
Richard talked about ordering a new white, wooden sign for the schoolhouse to be
installed along Route 130 in the area of the Liberty Tree in the Community Park.
