-2-
It is important to talk about landscapes and historic vistas and what we would like the
Town to look like. Ashley would like us to provide references to other online resources
or other supporting documents. She asked us to think how the Historic District can be
improved. If there are any regulatory framework issues that need to be improved on,
we should submit our requests.
Richard brought up the recent demolition of the Richard Bourne homestead, presently
owned by the Nichols family. Rosemary was disappointed that we were not notified
because we would have liked to have dendrochronoloa dating done on some of the
original woodwork, if any existed. Evan stated that there are different rules which apply
to Historic Landmarks, which this is not, so no one was notified. Richard mentioned a
new house which was just built in the Santuit Pond area. He feels that the Historic
Commission should have been notified because of the sensitivity of the area. Evan has
a copy of the town-wide PAL Report that lists all the sensitive sites in Mashpee,
together with the sensitivity mapping that was also done. Evan stated that he was not
aware that he had any need to notify the Historic Commission if and when new sensitive
sites were being approved for development. We would like to work closer with the
Planning Department so that we would be notified when demolitions are being special
permitted, and also about new builds in sensitive areas, as we used to be in the past.
The Historical Commission wants to make sure that we do not change the Town Center
which is located in the Historic District.
We had a discussion of the Ancient Ways, including the one at Willow Bend. Richard
asked where is the information kept about the Ancient Ways, and Evan said he had a
map in his office, but Rosemary thinks we have it here in the Archives as well. The
Ancient Ways are public roads, and the public has the right to traverse them. Evan said
that he would get a copy of the Map of the Ancient Ways to share with Richard.
We discussed further planning for the Presentation of our Historic Preservation Awards,
but we did not pick a date certain. It was suggested that we give the 2021 award to the
new Mashpee Town Seal Committee.
Motion to adjourn was proposed by Ava and seconded by Nancy at 5:40pm. Our next
meeting will be on April 21 st at 4:OOpm.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Graham, Sr. Clerk
