Ashley reported that the project is commencing. They will be going out to study tides and
doing a shore survey. the Woods Hole Group will be assisting on this. Further we will be going
for a State approved plan and we plan to tie Chapter 91 approval into this study. Ashley again
reiterated she would like someone from the Commission to join this Committee.
Don MacDonald asked Ashley about testing in Mashpee/Wakeby. Ashley reported that they do
bacteria testing weekly there as well as Santuit Pond. Ashley then outlined all testing
procedures for our Town's freshwater ponds.
Mashpee/Wakeby and John's Pond and fresh waters: Relevant question discussed above.
Water Quality: Don reported that boats and volunteers are set. Friday 7/15/22 will be our first
day of testing this season.
Barnstable County Coastal Resources: The Poppy entrance dredge is on the County
schedule but an exact date has not been determined. Lastly, the SPB Easement draft is under
review by the Town
Public Access: Three of our boat ramps will be assessed for storm water runoff: Mashpee/
Wakeby, John's Pond and Ockway Bay. They all made the Top 20 for a state grant. Ashley also
reported that the Ockway Bay ramp replacement will be a key project going forward.
LG/GP Expansion Project: Dick reported that he is in receipt of notice from the Natural
Heritage & Endangered Species Division of Fisheries &Wildlife that they received our NOI and
appropriate supporting information, and that the Division has determined that "this project, as
currently proposed, will not adversely affect the actual Resource Area Habitat of state
protected rare wildlife species. Dick also noted that he received notification from the Mass
Division of Marine Fisheries that they have received our NOI and will begin the review process
shortly.
Donovan McElligatt reported that they have found an invasive species of sponge at the
entrance to Hamblin Pond. The issue is that if they are disturbed during dredging operations
they will break up, grow and likely expand further down the channel and into the bay and
potentially taking over the waters. He is not sure where they came from but this needs to be
addressed before any dredging operations commence. The best solution is to harvest them
before they have a chance to spread. This is an issue that we need to pay attention to as it
effects our shellfish and waters. Assuming we can do this he sees no other issues with the
dredge project. Don MacDonald suggested his list of volunteers could be a source to get a
team together to do the harvesting.
New Business:
Ashley briefly reviewed new rules they are proposing that will impact jet ski operation: a safe
operator to exhaust distance requirement.
DNR Article for new boating regulations: Ashley read and reviewed the new rules they are
proposing for the next Town Meeting to eliminate the use of power boats on Santuit Pond
(except for appropriate official boats). The intent is to limit potential disturbance and
resuspension of sediment into the water column resulting from use of motorized boats thus
