- 2 -
woodshed. We will have to apply for the building permit, and then Catherine will
proceed with putting in the foundation. She is also trying to procure the shingles for us.
Richard presented us with a photo of proposed signs for marking the rivers in Mashpee.
He will present them to the Select Board and the Conservation Commission to get their
approval. They will resemble street signs, but the background color would be blue. We
had a discussion about whether or not we would include an additional sign in the
Wampanoag language for each sign identifying the rivers. Brian Hyde expressed his
opinion that he felt it was not necessary to include two signs, one in English and one in
the Wampanoag language. Ava felt that it was expressing the cultural diversity in
Mashpee, and therefore it would be of interest to the Community and visitors alike.
Richard made a motion that we send two letters, one to the Select Board and the other
to the Conservation Commission for notification and verification re marking the rivers.
Brian Hyde seconded the motion, and it was approved unanimously.
Nancy discussed other Cape Cod one-room schoolhouses. A suggestion was made
that it might be interesting to contact other towns to see if we could learn about the
other one-room schoolhouses. Richard and Nancy discussed that the Cuttyhunk one
was the only one-room school that was still operational before the Pandemic in 2020.
Nancy discussed that she had been contacted by Mary Kay Fox, previously on the
Board of Directors of the Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge, who is
interested in turning over their records to the Archives. Ava would like Nancy to contact
Mary to find out if she has the approval of the present head of the Board of Directors to
get their approval before we proceed.
Rosemary sent in two emails about her present research projects. The first was a
summary of her research on the Baptist Church, and the second was regarding a
project she is working on with Angela Marcellino, granddaughter of Stephen A. Peters.
Angela would like to use a map of Mashpee and expressed concerns about copyright
issues. Rosemary will help her with the map and other pertinent information that she
may want to use for the publication of her new cook book.
We discussed a date for the Annual Historical Preservation Awards Ceremony and
settled on mid-June. We should be considering who to nominate for the 2023 Award,
and the decision on who the recipient would be should be settled by year end.
Celebration of Indigenous People's Day - Richard would like to bring up a lot of the
photos in the basement at the Archives that have not yet been put on display. He would
like to have a Sub-Committee to work on renumbering all the photos. We would also
need to arrange for light refreshments. We have a lot of Popponesset photos that we
could display. Brian Hyde volunteered to write a letter to the Popponesset Inn
expressing that the Mashpee Historical Commission supports keeping the Inn, due to its
historical significance.
