Mash ee IncCusim and Diversit Committee
.p y
16 Great .Neck RoadWorth
"Mashpee, _%1A 02649
promoting this effort. She is going to invite the different Chairs of all the Committees and
Boards as well as the Town Manager to stop in and see the project.
Ms. Johnson-Graham commented on the Clean Water Act and the Mass Breast Cancer
Coalition. There have been studies from Harvard about PFAs, the fish having cancer and
tumors, it's even in food packaging and our cookware like Teflon. We as a community all eat
the same fish. There will be a movie about the devil we don't know, Teflon and the smoke
stacks going up with birds dying. Women are pregnant and having miscarriages along with
infertility and cancer. The oysters got depleted and there needs to be more done about this.
Ms. Stevenson brought the discussion back to the workshops, the third one being on Built
Systems. That is the opportunity to talk about sidewalks and crosswalks, going back to the
elderly woman who was killed. The Committee needs to speak on behalf of that and what
access students, people without cars, elderly, and that area on 28 where there is no crosswalk.
She has been impressed with the people she has shared tables with in the breakout sessions.
Ms. Stevenson thought the town would benefit greatly from a grant writer, somebody who
would write grants for all programs, and she likes this idea.
OLD BUSINESS
1. Update on Who We Are
The budget has been completed. This was a wonderful experience and a lot of hard work was
devoted. She has the highest respect for the teachers and they don't get enough credit for their
hard work. We want to keep promoting this effort. This will be a legacy program, after August it
will be moved to the high school and other parts of the community to be added onto. There
were 14 total countries represented. Some ideas so far are the Assistant Manager at Siena is
from Nepal and the owner of Polar Cave is an immigrant. For now we are focusing on the
students that come here from different countries. In terms of support, it was funded by
Mashpee Cultural Council and $2000 from Cape Cod 5, and every penny was used. It takes
money to do these projects. She was also impressed with restaurants like Estia, Sienna,
Burrito Bistro, and Asia that were able to donate cultural samplings of their food.
2. Review of Race Amity Day Festival
Ms. Stevenson was very pleased with Race Amity Day, she commented on what a great job
everyone did. She was especially grateful because the other project took up most of her time
but the subcommittee managed it all. Volunteers and the community help was tremendous.
The Polar Cave donated their ice cream.
4
