-2-
Richard gave us an update on the proposed River Signs. He has been advised by
Catherine that she thinks one sign — two languages — will be all that is necessary to
mark the Mashpee Rivers. Rosemary felt that he should check out whether or not we
can put up signs on State Roads vs Town Roads, specifically, Route 130, Route 151,
and Route 28. When Richard can provide the Wampanoag language translations to
Catherine, she will have them made up at an approximate cost of $350 per sign.
Richard also informed us that he had met with Bill McKay to discuss the Keeter
genealogy, and he met Bill's sister Lucinder who visited the Archives.
Richard also has an interest in placing historical banners along Mashpee's Historic
District which would be affixed to telephone poles, similar to what is on display in other
Cape Cod towns. We discussed it, and the associated costs, and decided to reconsider
at a future time.
Since we had a guest, Meredith Harris, who has been working on ideas about a piece of
stained glass with Joan Tavares -Avant, she was invited to give her presentation on
what the artwork would look like. She explained it would have several symbols of
Wampanoag culture...She had hoped to create a round glass window hanging that
could be put on display at the Archives. Rosemary objected to the project because she
feels that the Archives is not a Museum. Meredith has already applied for an Arts and
Culture State grant to pay for the artwork. She will explore what other Town buildings
might be interested in displaying her glass artwork. We all agreed that the samples that
she showed to us were beautiful, and that she certainly is a very talented artist in that
media.
Rosemary sent in an email about the previous stained glass artwork that we have which
was a gift from Robert Lynch and his wife who made it for us. It has not been put on
display because Ava felt that the American Indian depicted is an inaccurate depiction of
Mashpee Wampanoags, because of the western headdress.
We briefly discussed our Open House on October 10, 2022. We think that it was
enjoyed by over 60 attendees. Richard has been announcing the event successfully
with social media sites.
Ava set the date of November 17t" for our next meeting.
Ava made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and Richard seconded it, and all approved,
at 5:30pm.
Respectfully submitted
Ann Graham, Sr. Clerk
