Their Select Board was an all tribal elected membership. After
incorporation, it was 85% Tribal. The 1960's brought large scale development, and the
demographics and population shifted, thus making tribal representation less and less within
town governments, only to diminish going forward.
Prior to Mr. Weeden's election, Chuck Green was the last tribal representative on the Select
Board over 10 years ago. With that background and understanding, he did not envision himself
to be on the Select Board, as he was comfortable on the Planning Board. He took it for granted
and was voted out. With the passing of a Select Board member, he ran for the spot on the
Board and he wasn't sure he would get it. There hasn't always been a positive relationship with
town residents and tribal members, it's been a very conflicted past. He was elected with
humbling numbers, and he felt things were changing, and moving forward in a positive
direction of togetherness. Having said that, sitting on the Select Board is not always a
comfortable space to be in. There are a lot of issues raised with conflicting interest, and
anytime the Tribe is mentioned, people fail to realize tribal members are citizens. While Mr. Gottlieb was
on the Board, their terms came up at the same time. He did not see much value in being Chair
then. As a general practice, when someone is up for reelection they serve as Chair, Vice
Chair, or Clerk. Carol Sherman is by herself in the cycle of reelections. Ms. Sherman reached
out and asked to be Vice Chair when her term was up. When Mr. Gottlieb's election came
about he felt Andrew did a good job and he didn't see value in fighting over the position, it was
additional work and he had a lot going on at the time. When Andrew Gottlieb stepped down,
historically with how it worked, he assumed he would take over as Chair, because his election
was coming up next year and he was also the sitting Vice Chair.
As it played out, he was slammed with questions and things were being stated about what was
common practice in this scenario. Being the newest member, he went along with what was
being said as he looked to his board members for guidance to common practices and he relied
on that. They were adamant and he took their word for it. He entertained a motion out of
