Discussion of status of bathing beach at Mashpee Neck Road Town Landing. Mr. Harrington
commented that DPH has advised that, if the boat landing at Mashpee Neck Road Town Landing
is to be removed as a bathing beach, the Board must make a decision for the record. The
decision shall be sent to DPH, where the bathing beach will be removed from the list of State
monitored bathing beaches.
Mr. Harrington stated that it was his opinion that allowing bathing at the boat landing is a
hazard due to boat traffic,a potential for bathers being exposed to sewage discharge from boats
and higher concentrations of petroleum from exhaust, leaks, etc. The bathing beach is used
relatively infrequently due to the rocky bottom and previous described conditions.
Mr. Virgilio asked if this area is where people shellfish for oysters. Mr. Harrington answered in
the affirmative, stating that the area to the left of the ramp is mainly used to pull shellfish cages
out. Mr. Virgilio pointed out that the shellfish pieces are also a hazard to swimmers, and stated
that he felt the area should be cleaned of shellfish debris.
There being no further comments or discussion Kripani Patel motioned to rescind Mashpee
Neck Road Town Landing from the list of bathing beaches in Mashpee in accordance with 105
CMR 445.020 & 445.030 Section A, as it is considered a hazard by the Board of Health.
Motioned seconded by Ernest Virgilio.
