Other items not reasonably anticipated by the Chair:
At the beginning of the meeting Mr. Lyons made a brief explanation in an attempt to simplify what has proven
to be a very complex situation pertaining to the sewer project. He stated that the following numbers and
information was compiled from the Water District's published Annual Report.
He stated that the Mashpee Water Department pumps 580 million gallons of water a year to 10,000
customers and if adding 30 mgs per liter of nitrogen to that amount of water which is coming through Title V
(or equivalent) systems, it averages 145 thousand pounds of nitrogen going into our estuaries today. The
State is said to be going to require 75%of the nitrogen be removed. Getting rid of 75% of the nitrogen means
109 thousand pounds of nitrogen a year must be removed. In order to do that 1,300,000 gallons of water a
day must be processed over the next 15-20 years. Phase 1 is approximately 10% of what has to be done over
time and, he stated that it isn't a lot.
Mr. Lyons suggested that the Commission request a design blueprint that shows where the plant and recharge
beds are going to be located and what space is being reserved for future expansion from Mr. Jack and the
design engineer group. He stated that this information will be crucial moving forward.
Mr. Lyons went on to state that Sea Mist, Wind Chime and Deer Crossing all have the plumbing to assist in
contributing water to assist in processing at a relatively low cost.
Next meeting:
February 9, 2023
Mashpee Town Hall
Waquoit Meeting Room
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA
Mr. Lyons made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
Catherine Castaneda seconded the motion.
Motion was passed by unanimous consent
Meeting adjourned at 3:15PM
Respectfully Submitted,
2
Susan Donovan
Board Secretary
3
