-2-
that the Town now owns, which could possibly be used to show the commercial
industries of Mashpee' for example, the whaling, fishing, and the cranberry industries..
Rosemary recalled visitors who came into the Archives and shared information with us
about the Cranberry bogs. We do have two good reports on Santuit Pond and the
cranberry industry and the Mashpee-Wakeby Pond and the guest house that was
located there, and she also talked about the William Jones family burial site. Back in the
90s the Jones family remains were moved to the Old Indian Meeting House Cemetery.
Catherine has asked us to advise her about the sensitivity of the area of the State boat
ramp because she is working on some improvements in the ramp area. The Town GIS
map shows high sensitivity. Evan Lehrer will check with Catherine to get the exact
location she is going to be working in and get back to us. We agreed that we should
inform Catherine that extra care must be taken while working in that area.
Nancy was looking into how to look at some of the 35mm slides that we have in our
collection. We have been gifted with an old slide projector from James Boutilier, but we
may consider a more up-to-date way to view and document them. Ava said she would
prefer to use a professional local company, and find out what this project would cost.
Richard and Rosemary discussed her writing up a brief description of many of the
photos we have on display in the Archive. She agreed to work on it.
Richard reported that Catherine had one of her maintenance people look into replacing
the two windows.and the outside rotting window sills just on the side facing the rear of
the Archives. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $4,302 because they have
to be custom made and historically correct. The woodshed project is on hold because
Catherine has not been able to obtain the shingles and will now have to wait for the
work to be completed in the warmer weather in the spring of 2023. However, the DPW
has installed the foundation for the woodshed.
Richard also thinks that we need to hire an historic preservationist to look for any insect
damage. We need to keep the building in safe condition, and should consider having it
checked every 7-10 years or so. Richard is considering putting out a fund-raising letter
to Friends of the Mashpee One -Room Schoolhouse to raise additional funding, rather
than going back for more CPC Funds.
Richard proposed that we set up a War Memorial sub -committee; the motion was
seconded by Nancy Soderberg and voted unanimously. Richard thinks that about nine
members would be the right number. He will send out a letter in February requesting
people to join us, and see what response we get. He will be working on getting
representatives from the Town, members of the various branches of the services, and
he informed us of many other ideas that he has already considered. Joan suggested
that we consult with a few older members of the Tribe who might also be veterans, a
representative of the Women's Auxiliary, and invite a few other special guests.
