Popponesset Bay Inlet Dredging: Update on the County Dredge and the Overall Program.

Mr. Avis distributed a memorandum from Robert Tomaino, Mashpee Harbormaster. The memo
explained the reason the bay has not yet been dredged, citing multiple factors as to why it has not yet been
completed. The three most significant factors being, unprecedented wind and weather, multiple
mechanical malfunctions on the part of The Barnstable County Dredge Program during the dredging
period, and time of year restrictions enforced by the Mass. Division of Fisheries and Wildlife’s program
put in place to protect nesting shore birds.

In the memo, Mr. Tomaino stated that he is working diligently in an attempt to get the dredging done by
the end of the boating season. He has submitted amendments to multiple State and Federal agencies with
regard to getting the project complete outside of the dredging time period.

Co-Chair Cook commented that he personally believes that dredging not being done is affecting safe
navigation only and is not affecting water quality. Mr. Avis agreed.

Chair Thomas inquired as to whether the Town is with Barnstable in the dredging process in the Bay and
Mr. Avis stated that they are not.
1
