Review of Pertinent Studies and Discussions Regarding Pond ad Estuary Pollution.
Vice-Chair, Meredith Harris gave a detailed presentation to the Commission. Ms. Harris reported that she
referenced about 20 past studies detailing the water quality of Mashpee waters. It was determined that the
issue with the water is nitrogen. Through these studies it was determined that the TMDL should be .37 mgs of
total nitrogen per litre up to .50 mgs is the maximum amount of nitrogen to sustain aquatic life. The studies
show that the waters contain from .67 mgs and up to 1.00 mgs. The main cause is septic systems.
The question has been presented asking if the Town is moving too fast in moving forward with the sewer
project. The response, in summary, is the longer we wait the more it will cost and less likely our efforts are
going to work.
Ms. Harris’ presentation is attached hereto.

A motion was made by Mr. Lyons to request an update, from the Select Board, on the IMA’s of the
Popponesset and Waquoit Bay areas.
Motion seconded by Mrs. Sprout.
Motion passed by unanimous consent.

Correspondence
None at this Time.

Additional Topics
Mrs. Sprout suggested the Commission gather information regarding State funding availability for residents of
the Town.
Vice-Chair Harris suggested inviting Senator Moran and Representative Viera to a meeting to discuss sources
of funding available.
Chair Smith stated that he will seek information and will report back.

Catherine Castaneda suggested that the Commission put into place office hours giving residents of the Town
the opportunity to come in and ask questions personally or over the phone. She stated that she believes there
should be a broader outreach and would like to participate in something more aggressive to help educate the
Community beyond the Sewer Commission meetings and the website. Vice-Chair Harris will inquire with the
Library to see about reserving a room. Chris Ball stated that there is a large room at Mashpee TV that the
Sewer Commission can utilize.

Zackary Seabury announced that there will be two flu clinics coming up. He stated that this is the population
that will require outreach and said that the Commission is welcome to set up a table at the clinics. They will be
held at Christ the King Church the dates have yet to be determined.

2
